Working out and eating well are the keys to a successful training camp and the two biggest factors in balancing your calories for both a successful training camp and long-term healthy lifestyle.

Anyone who’s incorporated legitimate exercises and balanced diets into their routine knows, there are no shortcuts to successful fat burn and weight-loss. There are however, some basic health tips to remember that can reap wonderful benefits to speed up your metabolism and increase your fat burn.

So consider these next tips on how to boost your metabolism not so much “short-cuts” but rather “speed-ups”. Then get out there and lay the flame to your body fat with faster metabolism!

EAT More HEALTHY Protein

All food takes time and energy to digest, but protein takes more because it has to be broken down into amino acids. Not only are you nourishing your body with the building blocks of new muscle tissue, you’re increasing your metabolism through the digestive process AND boosting your health benefits.

Healthy proteins, especially those from fish sources like tuna and salmon, are also loaded with healthy omega fatty acids that leave you feeling full sooner, meaning you’re less likely to overeat and load your body with unwanted calories.

So in other words, more healthy protein results in less overeating and a faster metabolism while providing vital nutrients for the training body. Win-win!

Drink LESS Alcohol

Overconsumption of alcohol is riddled with many dangers, but did you know that even moderate consumption can impact your daily metabolism?

Alcohol is high in calories, and the digestion of it interrupts many other processes in the body. For example, because your body cannot store alcohol like it does fat (or sugar converted to fat), it converts it to acetate and uses it as fuel instead of the fat that’s in your system.

Beyond other effects, alcohol has no nutritional value while it dehydrates your body and lowers your blood sugar level in the process.

IF you’re serious about weight loss and fat burn during your training camp, ask yourself if another drink is worth the sweat it will take to undo it.

Drink BLACK Coffee

We don’t encourage people to over-caffeinate their bodies, but its true that a cup of black coffee can provide a swift kick to your metabolism.

Caffeine stimulates the nervous system to release fat for energy into your bloodstream, and boosts adrenalin (epinephrine) levels for elevated performance in the short term.

Keep in mind we’re specifically talking about black coffee, not lattes or mochas. Sugar and creamers (yes, even skim milk) have carb calories that will prevent the caffeine from its full fat burning effect.

DON’T forget the more caffeine you consume, through black coffee or elsewhere, the higher your tolerance will be and the less effect you will get from each cup. For that reason, we recommend limiting your intake to a single cup a day or less so that it really works best when you need it most.

SNACK more

Eating larger meals may feel more comforting, but your metabolism slows down for hours in between. Snacking on healthy foods keeps your metabolism burning at an elevated rate and means you can eat less at meal time to avoid the spike-crash cycle of blood sugar in your body.

Another benefit is that you won’t feel completely full or “stuffed,” and might find you have more consistent energy throughout the day.  We’re not talking about eating less overall; you can eat the same amount to meet your calorie demands, just eat smaller meals (or bigger snacks) more often and see how you feel. For more information on healthy snacking habits check our post here, for information on eating smaller meals throughout the day check our breakdown here.
